Chapter Eight

A week later Jonny’s Uncle Nick called to the house. Jonny hadn’t seen him since the Mystery Day party the previous October—Nick had been too ill to attend Jonny’s birthday party.

Jonny first discovered this the following morning when he was checking the security reports. He found the Chief in his office, a converted cloakroom off the side of the main hall.

He slammed the report down on the Chief’s desk. “What is this? My own uncle? He’s only relative I have left!”

The Chief looked up from his computer screen. “Sir, your orders were explicit. No one is allowed enter the house without your approval. I tried to contact you but you didn’t answer.”

“Did he say what he wanted?”

“It’s all there in the report. It was just a visit. He wanted to see yourself, your wife, the kids. Said he had some interesting news about the old days.”

Jonny dragged a chair over to the desk and dropped into it. “From now on, Nicholas Vernall has got my full permission to come to the house. He doesn’t need an invitation. And you don’t need to scan him for weapons. He can come and go as he pleases. Are we clear on that?”

The Chief leaned forward, resting on his elbows. “Mister Vernall, that would make him the greatest security threat we have. Your own family aren’t allowed to leave the grounds. And, uh, I’ve got to tell you I think that’s a mistake. They don’t like that at all. They’re uncooperative and abusive to me and my men.”

Jonny stared at him for a moment. “You’re fired.”

“And that would be another mistake. No one else would be willing to do this job.”

Jonny ran his hands over his face. “Look, I can’t let my family out because—”

The Chief interrupted. “Because you feel that their lives are in danger. I understand that. We all understand it. But there have been calls from the school board and social workers about the kids. Your friends, your wife’s family… They’re all beginning to ask questions. You need to relax the reins a little, otherwise the situation here is going to become public knowledge and that will increase the danger you’re facing, not diminish it.”

“I don’t know…”

“Allow the kids to go back to school, allow them to see their friends. I’ll have two of my men accompany each of them at all times. They will be discrete. We’ll need more men for that, though.”

He’s right, Jonny told himself. We can’t go on like this. If the New Heroes—or anyone else—are looking for me, we’d have had some kind of sign by now.

“OK… We’ll talk about it. Send a car to pick up my uncle, bring him here.”

An hour later, Jonny was waiting in the hallway behind the door’s bullet-proof glass. He’d done his best to look like he was in control of everything. He’d shaved, put on a new shirt, slicked his hair back so it didn’t look so untidy.

When the car stopped and the door was opened, Jonny’s first thought was that there had been a mistake, or that Uncle Nick hadn’t come alone.
